BUNNAHABHAIN - 19 years old - Vintage 2001 - The Story of the Wind & Wave - 56.5%
\nThis exceptional expression of Bunnahabhain is marketed by The Character of Islay Whisky Company, a renowned independent bottler offering an exclusive selection of authentic whiskies from the island of Islay. Here, the inspiration draws from the island's symbolic natural elements, with the legendary meeting between the wind and the waves – a poetic tribute named "The Story of the Wind & Wave". This whisky, distilled in 2001 at the Bunnahabhain distillery, then patiently matured for 19 years in carefully selected casks to develop its unique and complex profile.
\nThe Bunnahabhain distillery is located on the prestigious island of Islay (English pronunciation: "Ayla"), in the heart of Scotland, a region worldwide renowned for its exceptional Single Malt whiskies. Founded in 1881 by William Robertson, in partnership with William and James Greenlees, Bunnahabhain quickly conquered the market by 1883 thanks to the remarkable quality of its production. In 1963, facing growing popularity of Scottish whiskies, the distillery doubled its stills to ensure increased capacity while maintaining artisanal know-how. After a market slowdown in the 1980s that caused a temporary halt in 1982, production resumed vigorously in 1984. Since then, several ownership changes have occurred before the distillery joined the Distell group in 2013, guaranteeing enhanced quality and international distribution.
\nThe production process of Bunnahabhain whisky relies on delicately peated malted barley, combined with the exceptional pure water from the Margadale spring, precisely heated in the mash tun to produce a rich and balanced wort. Fermentation then takes place in Oregon pine vats, a specificity that gives the wort a distinctive character. Notably, none of the Scottish Single Malt whiskies produced by Bunnahabhain undergo chill filtration, in order to preserve the full intensity and depth of its natural aromas. Unlike most Islay whiskies, Bunnahabhain favors a less peated and smoky style, thus offering a unique, elegant, and refined tasting experience, appreciated by enthusiasts seeking subtlety and complexity.
