LEDAIG - 21 years old - Vintage 1998 - Marsala Finish - 55.8% ABV
The Tobermory Distillery is proudly located on the Isle of Mull, situated off the wild and picturesque west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it remains the only active whisky distillery on this majestic island and is among the oldest and most prestigious commercial distilleries in Scotland. In 1797, John Sinclair, a seaweed merchant specializing in kelp, applied for a lease of 57 acres in the area called Ledaig to build housing and a distillery. His request was initially denied, allowing him only to build a brewery. Driven by remarkable tenacity, Sinclair persevered, and a year later, the Ledaig distillery was established. The 1930s were marked by the Great Depression and American Prohibition, causing a steep drop in whisky demand that forced a 41-year halt in operations. The distillery was revived in 1993 following its acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers. Since 2013, it has belonged to the Distell group. Today, the distillery passionately produces Tobermory gin as well as two Single Malts with distinct profiles: a non-peated Tobermory and an intensely peated Ledaig. Although both whiskies share the same stills, fermentation vessels (washbacks), mash tuns, and pure water, their character is radically different, a contrast mainly due to the nature of the malted barley used.
This exceptional limited edition of Ledaig underwent an initial aging of 18 years in Sherry hogshead casks, followed by a refined finishing of 3 years in Marsala wine casks, imparting this whisky with a unique aromatic complexity and exceptional richness. This rarity comprises barely 1,126 bottles produced, offering connoisseurs a precious opportunity to discover an outstanding expression.
