LEDAIG - 14 years old - Vintage 2005 - The Single Malt Of Scotland - 57.10% ABV
The Tobermory Distillery is ideally located on the Isle of Mull, off the picturesque west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it is the only active whisky distillery on this fascinating island and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland, a true gem of Scottish whisky history. In 1797, John Sinclair, a seaweed merchant specializing in kelp, applied for a lease of 57 acres of land in the area called Ledaig, with the intention of building both housing and a distillery. His initial request was denied, allowing him only to build a brewery. However, his unwavering determination led him to persevere, and a year later, the Ledaig distillery was established, marking the beginning of a tradition-rich adventure.
The distillery's history has seen ups and downs. During the 1930s, the Great Depression combined with American Prohibition caused a collapse in whisky demand. As a result, the distillery was forced to close its doors for 41 long years. It was only in 1993, after being acquired by Burn Stewart Distillers, that Tobermory rose from the ashes. Since 2013, it has belonged to the prestigious Distell group. Tobermory Distillery also produces a renowned gin, as well as two distinct Single Malts: an elegant, unpeated Tobermory and a heavily peated Ledaig, offering two unique aromatic profiles. Despite using the same traditional equipment – stills, washbacks (fermentation vats), mash tuns – and the same pure local water, it is the malted barley that gives these whiskies their deeply different and authentic characters.
This exclusive limited edition of 618 bottles has been carefully bottled by Elixir Distillers, a respected independent English bottler known for the quality of its Single Malts, as part of the prestigious “Single Malts of Scotland” collection. This remarkable peated Ledaig whisky, distilled in 2005, has enjoyed an optimal aging of 14 years in Sherry casks, revealing a rich and intense aromatic complexity.
