Ardbeg is an iconic distillery located on the mythical island of Islay, in Scotland. Recognized as one of the oldest distilleries on the island, Ardbeg has built a reputation for excellence for its whiskies among the most powerfully peated on the market. Bold and innovative, the Ardbeg distillery was the first to send its whisky into space in 2011, experimenting with extraterrestrial aging at the International Space Station, thus analyzing the unique impact of weightlessness on the aromatic complexity of the spirit.
Whisky production has been actively ongoing on the site since 1798, with official commercialization starting as early as 1815, the same year as its prestigious neighbor Laphroaig. Immediately, Ardbeg met great success, notably for the incorporation of its whiskies into globally recognized blends. However, from 1838 onwards, the distillery went through many periods of instability, including changes of ownership and bankruptcies, until its closure in 1981. Reopened in 1989 with limited seasonal production, it truly represented a revival in 1997 after its purchase by Glenmorangie. Today, Ardbeg is proudly integrated within the Glenmorangie group, itself owned by the prestigious luxury group LVMH.
Equipped with two traditional stills, the Ardbeg distillery produces nearly one million liters of pure alcohol annually, offered exclusively under the Single Malt denomination. Its whiskies are mostly aged in Bourbon casks, accompanied by partial aging in Sherry casks. The character of these whiskies is entirely strongly peated while offering a unique aromatic signature, less maritime than some other Islay whiskies. Ardbeg is notably distinguished by its intense and balanced nuances of smoke, warm spices, and sweet softness, capturing the very essence of Islay tradition.
Pronounced "Oog-a-dal", Ardbeg Uigeadail is a privileged blend that masterfully marries the deeply smoky and classic notes of Ardbeg with the rich and mellow flavors of raisins, rescued from aging in carefully selected old Sherry casks. This unique marriage offers an intense, powerful, and persistent gustatory emotion that will delight connoisseurs as well as new enthusiasts.
