Benromach is an iconic distillery of Speyside, in the heart of Scotland, founded in 1898 by Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman. Today, it is proudly owned and managed by the prestigious whisky merchant Gordon and Macphail based in Elgin. Located near the charming town of Forres in Morayshire, the distillery benefits from a pure water source from the Chapelton hills in the Romach region. This source is a key element that gives Benromach whisky its unique and authentic character.
The founders had solid expertise: Duncan McCallum came from the Glen Nevis distillery in Campbeltown, while F.W. Brickman was a recognized spirits broker in Leith, Edinburgh. Construction of the distillery began in 1898, but production was delayed due to the whisky industry crisis. The distillery produced its first whisky only in 1900 but had to close quickly due to financial problems. After several ownership changes, including takeover by Harvey McNair & Co in London in 1911 and by Benromach Distillery Ltd after World War I, the distillery came under the control of Associated Scottish Distilleries Ltd in 1938.
Benromach underwent modernization and technical advances between 1966 and 1974 before closing in 1983. It was in 1993 that Gordon and MacPhail took over the site, restarting production in 1997 with a redesigned distillery for optimized operation. Finally, the official reopening in 1998 by Charles, Prince of Wales, marked a new era for Benromach, with the first bottling of this exceptional single malt in 2004.
Distinctive of the Speyside tradition, Benromach whisky revives the ancient art of using peat pieces to maintain a smoky fire during malting. The locally grown Scottish barley is thus malted with a light peat smoke, offering an original and balanced aromatic signature.
The richness and intensity of flavors are shaped by careful aging exclusively in first-fill oak casks, carefully selected from barrels that held Bourbon or Sherry, thus ensuring complexity and depth.
The Benromach 10 years old now represents the essential reference of the new core range. It is a finely balanced single malt, aged in first-fill Bourbon and Sherry casks, offering delicately peated notes, a smooth body, and an elegant, persistent finish.
