Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 50% is a single malt produced at the Bruichladdich distillery on the west coast of Islay, with a philosophy firmly focused on the terroir. Here, the barley comes from farms on the island, grown as close as possible to the distillery to capture in the glass the maritime climate, salty winds, and unique light of this piece of Scottish land. The slow distillation, the use of intensely aromatic peat, and aging in carefully selected casks give a whisky where the power is always guided by precision and balance. The 2014 vintage, bottled at 50%, offers a vibrant and precise profile, with an energy that respects the naturally oily texture of the distillate. On the nose, Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 unfolds a frank but refined smoke, made of embers, dried seaweed, and wood fire, nuanced by notes of lemon, juicy apple, biscuity malt, and light vanilla. The marine, iodine, and saline touch intertwines with accents of dry herbs, white pepper, and a hint of honey, giving a complex bouquet without ever tipping into heaviness. On the palate, the attack is broad and warm, with a typical rich texture of the house, supported by a framework of ashy peat and ripe yellow fruits. Flavors of candied citrus, deep cereal, soft caramel, and fine spices gradually settle in, supported by an iodine minerality that lengthens the mouthfeel and recalls the Islay coastline. The finish is long, vibrant, marked by smoke, sea salt, lemon zest, and a subtle noble bitterness that makes you want to return to the glass. Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2014 is ideally enjoyed neat, after slight aeration, then possibly with a few drops of water to further develop its cereal and lemon nuances. This edition highlights 100% Islay barley, sourced exclusively from selected farms on the island. The artisanal distillation and meticulous aging in a demanding selection of first-fill bourbon casks, wine casks, and rare barrels bring remarkable aromatic complexity. The whisky presents a pale, bright golden color, reflecting both its youth and the richness of its terroir.

On the nose, the peaty signature is immediately expressed but with elegance: subtle embers, salty and coastal peat, carried by refined aromas of candied lemon, ripe pear, yellow apple, and creamy vanilla. Iodized notes, a touch of floral honey, fresh cereals, and a marine hint reminiscent of Islay’s wild coast are also distinguishable. The balance between the power of smoke and the finesse of fruit makes this Port Charlotte a modern Islay, bright and expressive, masterfully controlled from start to finish.
