Ardbeg is an iconic distillery located on the mythical island of Islay, in Scotland. As one of the oldest distilleries on this island famous for its peated whiskies, Ardbeg enjoys worldwide renown. Its whiskies are recognized as some of the most peated and complex in the world. Ardbeg is also a pioneer in innovation: it was the first distillery to send its whisky into space, sending part of its production to the International Space Station in 2011 to study the impact of weightlessness on aging and aromas. Founded in 1798, the distillery marketed its first whisky in 1815, the same year as its illustrious neighbor Laphroaig. Since its beginnings, Ardbeg met immediate success with high demand, especially for blends, before going through a period of instability including ownership changes and bankruptcies, leading to its closure in 1981. Its revival came in 1989 with limited production of two months per year, before a full restart in 1997 following its acquisition by Glenmorangie. Today, Ardbeg is proudly owned by the French luxury group LVMH through its Glenmorangie group, ensuring international quality and distribution.
Ardbeg's two traditional stills produce about one million liters of alcohol per year, exclusively in the form of Single Malt. The maturation is mainly done in American Bourbon barrels, complemented by finishing in Sherry casks to add complexity and depth. Ardbeg's unique character lies in its intense peat, but with a balanced dimension: unlike other Islay whiskies, it does not have an overly maritime profile but is rather known for its powerfully smoky, spicy, and subtly sweet aromas, offering an unforgettable sensory experience to refined single malt enthusiasts.
