ARDBEG - Grooves - Ardbeg Day 2018 - 46%
Ardbeg is an iconic distillery located on the island of Islay, in the heart of Scotland. Recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious distilleries on this renowned island, Ardbeg offers whiskies known for their remarkable peaty intensity. Historically innovative, it became famous for being the first distillery to send its whisky into space: in 2011, part of its production was sent to the International Space Station to study the impact of weightlessness on aromas and maturation, a unique feat in the world of spirits.
Ardbeg's production dates back to 1798, with initial commercialization as early as 1815, the same year as its illustrious neighbor Laphroaig. Quickly, Ardbeg experienced rapid success, mainly due to strong demand for its whisky used in blended whiskies. However, from 1838, the distillery went through a turbulent period marked by frequent ownership changes and several bankruptcies, leading to its definitive closure in 1981. The revival was gradual: after a limited reopening for two months annually in 1989, it was in 1997, under the impetus of the Glenmorangie group, that full production resumed. Today, Ardbeg is an integral part of the French luxury group LVMH's portfolio within Glenmorangie, ensuring a strong international presence.
Ardbeg's two traditional stills produce about one million liters of pure alcohol annually, exclusively distilled as Single Malt. Aging is mainly done in Bourbon casks, complemented by a smaller proportion in Sherry casks, offering a balanced aromatic complexity. Ardbeg whiskies are characterized by intense peat, measured between 50 and 55 ppm, but stand out with a less maritime personality than other Islay whiskies. They are especially appreciated for their smoky, spicy, and slightly sweet profile, appealing to lovers of strong sensations and depth of flavor.
Ardbeg Grooves is the special edition launched in 2018 to celebrate Ardbeg Day, a highly anticipated annual event for enthusiasts. This original blend combines the Ardbeg Signature aged in Bourbon casks with whisky finished in heavily charred wine casks. These casks are called "grooves" in reference to the deep grooves left by the intense charring of the wood, which impart unique notes to the whisky, rich in character and depth.
