Chartreuse – Liqueur of the 9th Centenary – Bottling 2025 – 47%
For more than four centuries, Chartreuse has held a unique place in the history of spirits. Crafted by the Carthusian Fathers from a recipe entrusted to only two monks, it combines 130 plants, flowers, roots, and spices in a complex and mysterious balance. Its legend dates back to 1605, when the monks received a manuscript of the “Elixir of Long Life” attributed to a 16th-century alchemist. Over time, this expertise was refined, giving birth to the Elixir Végétal and later to the celebrated Green and Yellow Chartreuse.
The Liqueur of the 9th Centenary was created in 1984 to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the foundation of the Grande Chartreuse Monastery (1084). Produced in small quantities, it embodies the centuries-old heritage of the Order and the unmatched mastery of the Carthusian distillers. The 2025 bottling, at 47% ABV, continues this tradition, offering a refined and emblematic expression of Chartreuse.
As with all Chartreuses, the selection, crushing, and blending of the plants remain a task entrusted to only two monks within the Monastery. The herbs are then macerated in pure alcohol before being distilled and aged for long periods in the vast Voiron cellars, renowned for hosting some of the longest maturations in the world. This unique process gives the liqueur its aromatic intensity and exceptional depth.
The Liqueur of the 9th Centenary combines power and elegance. It stands out with remarkable herbal richness, balanced by spicy, honeyed, and floral notes, carried by a velvety, generous texture. The long, harmonious finish captures all the nobility and singular identity of Chartreuse.
