CHARTREUSE - Green - 2024 Edition - 55% ABV
The Order of the Chartreuse had existed for over 500 years when, in 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery located in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious inheritance from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript revealing the recipe for an "Elixir," nicknamed the "Elixir of Long Life." This manuscript, likely the work of a 16th-century alchemist, demonstrated profound knowledge of plants, combining botanical expertise with the subtle art of assembling, infusing, and macerating up to 130 rare herbs, delicately dosed to create a tonic of exceptional harmony. The recipe was so complex that only certain parts were understood and applied at Vauvert. In the early 18th century, this precious manuscript was sent to the Order's Mother House, the Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. The Monastery's Apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, succeeded in unraveling the mystery and, in 1737, wrote the detailed and practical formula to prepare this extraordinary elixir, revised in 1764. In 1903, the Chartreuse distillery was nationalized by the French government, forcing the monks to leave. After the 1929 bankruptcy, the monks reclaimed the Chartreuse brand and took back possession of the distillery, established since 1860 at Fourvoirie, close to the Monastery, passionately relaunching the authentic production of the true Chartreuse liqueurs. In 1935, a landslide severely damaged Fourvoirie; production was then transferred to Voiron, where it continues today with ancestral know-how.
The rigorous selection, meticulous grinding, and secret blending of herbs, medicinal plants, and other essential natural ingredients for producing Chartreuse liqueurs are carefully carried out within the monastery by two dedicated monks. Once these precious ingredients are assembled, they are shipped to Voiron, where they are first macerated in a carefully selected high-quality alcohol before being precisely distilled. These liqueurs then benefit from prolonged aging in immense oak barrels, stored in a specially designed cellar housing one of the longest maturations in the world, thus guaranteeing unparalleled aromatic richness.
The Green Chartreuse is made from a unique blend of 130 plants, herbs, and various spices macerated in a grape-based alcohol. After distillation, it is aged for several years in oak barrels, which give it its bright green color, remarkable aromatic complexity, and an intense alcoholic strength of 55%. Recognized worldwide for its subtle balance between strength and finesse, Green Chartreuse is a must-have for lovers of exceptional liqueurs.
