THE BALVENIE - 12 years - Double Wood Single Malt - 40%
The Balvenie Distillery is located in the prestigious Speyside region, in the heart of Scotland, world-renowned for its exceptional whiskies. This distillery is one of the three jewels of the Dufftown site owned by the William Grant company, alongside Glenfiddich and Kininvie. After two decades of experience at Mortlach, William Grant decided to buy land near Balvenie Castle and laid the foundations of his distillery in autumn 1886. At the beginning of 1892, the transformation of an 18th-century manor, the Balvenie New House, into a distillery began. After fifteen months of work, on May 1, 1893, the first distillation was carried out, marking the birth of Balvenie. Although the three Dufftown distilleries share the same pure water source and malt, each develops a unique character, giving their single malts a distinct identity. Historically, Balvenie mainly supplied William Grant's blends, but today the distillery focuses on producing its Single Malts, including the famous Monkey Shoulder, while highlighting its expressions matured in various casks, a guarantee of remarkable quality and rich taste.
The iconic Malt Master of Balvenie, David C. Stewart MBE, embodies excellence and innovation. Joining the distillery in 1962 at only 17 years old, he dedicated over 54 years to perfecting the art of Scottish whisky. Known for his innovative techniques, especially in cask finishes, David Stewart has profoundly influenced modern maturation and blending methods. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the industry, he was honored in 2016 with an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) presented by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 years old captivates enthusiasts with its unique two-step aging process. First matured in traditional casks – barrels and hogsheads that previously held American oak Bourbon – it is then transferred for 9 months into Oloroso sherry casks, adding complexity and fruity notes. Finally, a finishing maturation in large oak vats (tuns) for 3 to 4 months perfectly balances the flavors, offering a harmonious and refined single malt.
