CHARTREUSE - Yellow Cuvée des MOF - Best Craftsmen of France Sommeliers - 2023 Bottling - Jeroboam Format - 45% ABV
The Order of the Chartreuse has existed for over 500 years since, in 1605, in a Chartreuse monastery located in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript describing an "Elixir," nicknamed the "Elixir of Long Life." This manuscript, likely the work of a 16th-century alchemist, demonstrated a profound knowledge of herbs and the complex art of assembling, infusing, and macerating nearly 130 plants to create an exceptionally balanced tonic. The recipe was so complex that only certain extracts were decoded and used in Vauvert. In the early 18th century, this precious manuscript was transferred to the Mother House of the Order, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. The Monastery's Apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, managed to unravel the mysteries of the formula and wrote in 1737 a practical method for preparing this Elixir, finalized in 1764. In 1903, following the nationalization of the Chartreuse distillery by the French government, the monks were expelled. However, after the bankruptcy in 1929, they regained ownership of the Chartreuse brand. They returned to their distillery, built in 1860 at Fourvoirie, near the Monastery, and relaunched the authentic production of Chartreuse liqueurs. Unfortunately, in 1935, Fourvoirie was almost destroyed by a landslide, forcing production to be transferred to Voiron, where it continues to this day.
The rigorous selection, meticulous grinding, and precise blending of the secret herbs, plants, and other medicinal botanicals used in the making of these liqueurs are carried out directly within the monastery by two expert monks. Once the ingredients are assembled, they are sent to Voiron where they undergo a long maceration in a carefully chosen exceptional alcohol before being distilled with the utmost expertise. These exceptional liqueurs are then aged for several years in huge oak barrels, stored in the aging cellar renowned for housing some of the longest maturations in the world.
Born from a prestigious collaboration with the sommeliers Best Craftsmen of France, the story of this unique cuvée of the famous Chartreuse liqueur dates back to 2007. It is a revisited version of the Yellow, a spirit both distinctive and accessible, combining softness and nerve, freshness and power, complexity and aromatic richness, for a perfect balance that appeals to both enthusiasts and the most demanding connoisseurs.
