THE BALVENIE - French Oak Pineau Finish - 16 years - 47.6%
The Balvenie Distillery is located in the heart of the prestigious Speyside region in Scotland. It is one of the three renowned distilleries situated on the historic site of Dufftown, owned by the William Grant company, alongside Glenfiddich and Kininvie. After a two-decade career, William Grant decided to leave his position at the Mortlach distillery and acquired land adjacent to Balvenie Castle. He then designed the plans for this new distillery, with the foundation stone laid in autumn 1886. In early 1892, the conversion work of an 18th-century manor called Balvenie New House into a distillery began. Fifteen months later, on May 1, 1893, distillation officially started at the Balvenie distillery. Although the three Dufftown distilleries share the same pure water, the same malt, and fairly similar manufacturing processes, each distinguishes itself by the uniqueness of its exceptional malts. Historically, Balvenie was mainly a source for William Grant's blended whiskies, but recently, the distillery has focused on producing its premium Single Malt, with a smaller portion dedicated to the famous Monkey Shoulder blend. The distillery also enjoys a solid reputation thanks to its range of unique expressions, aged and finished in a variety of carefully selected woods.
The Malt Master of Balvenie is David C. Stewart MBE, an iconic figure in Scottish whisky. Joining The Balvenie distillery in 1962 at only 17 years old, he has devoted over 54 years to the art of distillation. His innovative skills revolutionized contemporary production techniques, notably popularizing cask finishes with subtle tones. In recognition of his immense contribution to the industry, David Stewart was awarded the prestigious MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) title by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2016.
The Balvenie French Oak Pineau Finish is an exceptional whisky aged for a minimum of 16 years in traditional Scottish oak casks, before being delicately transferred for finishing in authentic French oak casks that previously held Pineau des Charentes. This sweet fortified wine, emblematic of the Charente region in France, imparts complex, fruity notes and an elegant sweetness that enhance the tasting experience of this single malt.
