Adelphi - Fusion - 5 years - The Brisbane Batch 1 - 57.5%
Adelphi Selection is a renowned independent distiller and bottler based in Argyllshire and Fife, in the heart of the prestigious Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1825, the company traces its roots to the creation of the Adelphi distillery located in the historic Gorbals district of Glasgow. The brothers Charles and David Gray launched this venture, renaming the distillery Loch Katrine Adelphi after the installation of an ingenious pipeline bringing pure water from Loch Katrine to Glasgow, a major innovation for whisky quality. Ten years later, the property passed to A Walker & Co, owners of large distilleries in Liverpool and Limerick, Ireland. Purchased in 1903 by DCL (Distillers Company Limited), the distillery unfortunately ceased operations in 1907 following the tragedy of the "Great Gorbals Disaster": the collapse of a fermentation vat flooded the neighboring street with hot alcohol, causing the drowning of a man and triggering great panic. The story continued in 1993 with the revival of the Adelphi Distillery Ltd brand by Jamie Walker, great-grandson of Archibald Walker, former owner. He transformed Adelphi into an independent bottling company before selling it in 2004 to Keith Falconer and Donald Houston.
Specializing in Single Cask bottlings, the company guarantees whiskies without chill filtration or added coloring, offering an authentic and pure aromatic experience. Each year, about 50 rare casks are selected for limited editions. The "Fascadale" line highlights small batch bottlings from unspecified island distilleries, available at various ages, showcasing the richness and diversity of Scottish whisky. Since 2014, Adelphi has also become a distiller with its own Ardnamurchan Distillery, symbolizing its innovation and artisanal mastery.
The unique design of the "Dancey Man", visible on every Adelphi bottle, is inspired by a Victorian cartoon depicting Sir William Gladstone energetically dancing a 'Pas de Bas' on a barley ear. This motif celebrates the adoption of a revolutionary whisky taxation law, based solely on the quantity remaining in the cask after maturation, thus ensuring a fair assessment of quality.
The Brisbane is an original and exclusive fusion of Scottish whiskies from the prestigious Glen Garioch distillery (two Spanish oak ex-sherry hogsheads), Glen Grant (part of an ex-Sherry butt), and malt whiskies from the renowned Starward Distillery in Australia (three ex-Apera casks). This 5-year-old single malt whisky pays tribute to Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, a distinguished soldier and astronomer who left Scotland in 1821 to become governor of New South Wales. During his five years in Australia, he worked to improve living conditions, built the Parramatta observatory, and founded the community that became the thriving metropolis of Brisbane. This exceptional batch includes 932 numbered bottles, intended for discerning enthusiasts.
