The Order of the Chartreuse had existed for over 500 years when, in 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery in Vauvert, a peaceful suburb of Paris, the monks received an exceptional gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript recounting the recipe of a mysterious "Elixir," nicknamed "Elixir of Long Life." This manuscript was likely the work of a 16th-century alchemist, endowed with profound knowledge of medicinal plants and herbs, capable of assembling, infusing, and macerating with precision more than 130 different herbs to create a tonic of perfect harmony. The complexity of the recipe was such that only certain fragments were understood and used at Vauvert. At the beginning of the 18th century, this precious manuscript was transferred to the Order's Mother House, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. The monastery's apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, eventually uncovered the secret and, in 1737, wrote the complete preparation formula for the Elixir, finalized in 1764. In 1903, under the French government's nationalization policy, the Chartreuse distillery was requisitioned and the monks expelled. However, during the 1929 bankruptcy, the monks recovered the rights to the Chartreuse brand. They then returned to their historic distillery built in 1860 at Fourvoirie, near the monastery, and resumed authentic production of the true Chartreuse liqueurs. In 1935, a landslide almost entirely destroyed Fourvoirie, forcing the transfer of production to Voiron, where it remains today.
The rigorous selection, meticulous grinding, and precise blending of the secret herbs, rare plants, and other medicinal botanicals used in the production of the liqueurs are carried out inside the monastery by only two expert monks. Once assembled, these ingredients are then transported to Voiron, where they macerate in an exceptionally high-quality alcohol, carefully chosen. This mixture is then distilled with great mastery to ensure the excellence of the final product. The liqueurs are subsequently aged for several years in immense precious oak barrels, then stored in a maturation cellar renowned for being one of the longest and most meticulous in the world. This unique process gives Chartreuse Yellow its unparalleled taste, aromatic richness, and legendary finesse.
