TOBERMORY - 23 years old - Finished in Oloroso Cask - 46.3% ABV
The Tobermory Distillery is ideally located on the Isle of Mull, off the wild and preserved west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it remains the only whisky distillery on the Isle of Mull and ranks among the oldest commercial Scottish distilleries, bearing a rich historical heritage and unique expertise. In 1797, John Sinclair, a merchant specializing in kelp harvesting, applied for a lease of 57 acres in the renowned Ledaig area to build housing and a distillery. His initial request was denied, allowing only the establishment of a brewery. Persisting in his vision, he established the Ledaig distillery a year later, which would eventually become the Tobermory Distillery. The 1930s, marked by the Great Depression and Prohibition in the United States, led to a dramatic drop in whisky demand, resulting in the complete shutdown of the distillery for 41 years. Its revival came in 1993 following its acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers. Since 2013, it has been an integral part of the Distell group. Today, the distillery produces not only the renowned Tobermory Gin but also two distinctive Single Malts: a non-peated Tobermory and a heavily peated Ledaig. These two whiskies, although made using the same stills, fermentation vats (washbacks), mash tuns, and water, reveal profoundly distinct characters linked to the specific nature of the malted barley used for each expression.
This rare expression of Tobermory comes from the classic 15-year-old Tobermory, intensely refined by an additional 8 years maturation in Oloroso Sherry casks, granting it aromatic richness and exceptional complexity.
