VELIER - BEENLEIGH - 5 years - Vintage 2015 - 59%
Beenleigh Artisan Distillers is an iconic rum distillery located in Logan, Queensland, Australia. Founded on a rich history dating back to 1865, when John Davy and Francis Gooding, two English entrepreneurs, acquired 300 acres of land along the Albert River. They named this clearing after their former farm in Devonshire, "Beenleigh." Initially intended for cotton cultivation, the land proved much more suitable for sugarcane farming, offering a far more promising economic alternative. Licensed from 1884, the Beenleigh distillery built its reputation using molasses from local sugarcane, thus anchoring Australian rum in its original terroir. After a pause in 1969 due to decreased demand, the artisanal tradition was revived in 1972 thanks to the Davy family. Successive modernization of the plant allowed bottling not only rum but also whisky, brandy, gin, vodka, and ouzo. Despite challenges, including a major flood in 1974, the distillery prospered, notably under the Moran family ownership from 1980, with major renovations and expansions. Today, under the direction of Tarac Industries since 1984, Beenleigh combines modern equipment—sophisticated fermentation tanks, column stills—and traditional copper pot stills, ensuring optimal production quality.
This exceptional rum was distilled both in column and pot still in December 2015. It benefited from careful aging in first-fill American oak barrels ex-Bourbon, in the warehouse located in the unique and arid Riverland region of South Australia. This climatic terroir provides slow and steady maturation, developing aromatic richness, complexity, and a perfect balance between sweetness and strength.
