BUNNAHABHAIN - 18 years - 46.3% ABV
The Bunnahabhain Distillery, iconic of the island of Islay (pronounced "Ayla"), in Scotland, boasts a rich history dating back to 1881. Founded by William Robertson in partnership with William and James Greenlees, it quickly became a major player in Scottish whisky production. By 1883, the distillery experienced strong growth, reinforced by the doubling of its stills in 1963, in response to the growing popularity of Islay whiskies. Despite a temporary production halt in 1982 due to a market downturn, Bunnahabhain managed to revive two years later and has endured through decades with several ownership changes before joining the prestigious Distell Group in 2013.
The secret to Bunnahabhain's production lies in the use of lightly peated malted barley (3 ppm), combined with pure spring water "Margadale" heated in the mash tun to create a wort of exceptional quality. Fermentation then takes place in Oregon pine vats, giving the whisky its unique profile. Notably valued by authentic single malt enthusiasts, no Bunnahabhain whisky is chill-filtered, thus preserving the richness and complexity of its aromas. Unlike most Islay whiskies, Bunnahabhain products are not heavily peated or smoky, offering a more subtle, refined, and balanced tasting experience.
