ARDBEG - Ardbog - Ardbeg Day 2013 - 52.1%
Ardbeg is an iconic distillery located on the wild isle of Islay, in Scotland. Recognized as one of the oldest and most prestigious on the island, it is famous for producing some of the most peaty and powerful whiskies on the market. Ardbeg is also a pioneer in innovation, having been the first distillery to send whisky into space: in 2011, part of its production was sent to the International Space Station to study the impact of weightlessness on the aging and aromatic complexity of the spirit.
Ardbeg's production dates back to 1798, and its first commercial release was in 1815, the same year as its legendary neighbor, Laphroaig. From the beginning, Ardbeg enjoyed rapid success, with strong demand not only for its single malts but also for its components in various renowned blends. After a turbulent period marked by multiple ownership changes and successive bankruptcies, the distillery was forced to close its doors in 1981. Its partial reopening in 1989 allowed production only two months per year until 1997, when Glenmorangie took over operations and relaunched full production. Today, Ardbeg is an integral part of the French luxury group LVMH through its Glenmorangie group.
Equipped with two traditional stills, Ardbeg produces about one million liters of pure alcohol annually, exclusively available as Single Malt. Aging is mainly done in Bourbon casks, complemented by maturation in carefully selected Sherry casks, thus conferring unique complexity. Ardbeg stands out for its strongly peaty flavor profile but differs from other Islay whiskies by a less maritime character, favoring smoky, spicy, and delicately sweet notes.
Ardbog is a limited edition released on Ardbeg Day 2013, made from a blend aged in precious former Bourbon casks combined with Sherry Manzanilla butts, which bring remarkable finesse and depth to the whisky.
