Les Frères de la Côte are a collective of importers and bottlers specialized in products transported exclusively by eco-friendly sailing ships. Founded in 2015 by two French sailing captains, Raphaël and François Mangin, this committed company follows a sustainable approach by offering maritime trade respectful of the environment. The Frères de la Côte rums have been bottled since 2017 in their warehouse located in Saint-Étienne, in the heart of the Loire region. They sail aboard the Très Hombres, a 32-meter brigantine sailing ship without an engine, capable of carrying up to 35 tons of cargo. Since 2010, the Très Hombres has completed 12 transatlantic rotations from its home port in the Netherlands, illustrating the reliability and consistency of this ecological mode of transport. In 2019, a new company, La Compagnie des Frères de la Côte, was founded to rehabilitate the voilier Zeehaen, a majestic brigantine over 45 meters long capable of carrying up to 120 tons of goods. The project aims to develop a true fleet of cargo sailing ships offering a sustainable alternative to traditional maritime transport, promoting a more ethical, human, and environmentally respectful transatlantic trade that supports biodiversity and sustainable development.
This Exceptional Old Rum from Les Frères de la Côte is a molasses rum originating from the island of Barbados in the Caribbean, a region renowned for its superior quality rums. Distilled in 2011 at the renowned Foursquare distillery, this rum first aged in American Bourbon barrels, which gave it softness and complexity, until January 2020, when it arrived on the Très Hombres. It was then transferred into a cask that previously contained Sherry Oloroso, bringing intense aromatic richness and fruity notes before shipment. The 4 months of sailing through the Caribbean to Amsterdam allowed for a dynamic and innovative maturation, thanks to the constant movement and sea air, thus marking this rum with a unique signature. After arrival, the cask rested for 10 months in the cool and humid cellars of Saint-Étienne, ensuring a slow and harmonious maturation before the final bottling.
