THE BALVENIE - 21 years - Port Wood Finish - 40% ABV
The Balvenie Distillery is located in the famous Speyside region, in the heart of Scotland, renowned worldwide for the exceptional quality of its whiskies. It is one of the three iconic distilleries situated on the historic site of Dufftown, owned by William Grant, alongside the Glenfiddich and Kininvie distilleries. After leaving his position at the prestigious Mortlach distillery, William Grant acquired land near the old Balvenie Castle. He then designed the distillery plans, with the foundation stone laid in autumn 1886. In 1892, the conversion of an 18th-century manor called Balvenie New House into a distillery began. Fifteen months later, on May 1, 1893, the very first distillation took place, giving birth to an exceptional Single Malt. Despite using the same pure water and malt as the other distilleries on the site, Balvenie developed a unique character through its distinctive production methods. For a long time, Balvenie mainly contributed to the blends of William Grant, but today the distillery focuses on the growing demand for its refined Single Malts, with a smaller quantity dedicated to the renowned Monkey Shoulder blend. Balvenie is particularly recognized for its range of expressions matured in casks made from various wood types, mastering the art of complex and subtle "finishes."
The distillery's Malt Master is David C. Stewart MBE, an iconic figure in the world of Scottish whisky. Joining The Balvenie distillery in 1962 at the age of 17, he has dedicated over five decades to perfecting the art of distillation. A pioneer in innovative techniques, especially in "cask finishing," he has profoundly influenced contemporary production methods. In recognition of his immense contribution to the whisky industry and culture, he was honored in 2016 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the prestigious title of MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire).
The Balvenie PortWood is a remarkable Single Malt, aged for 21 years before being delicately finished in former Port wine casks, imparting rich, velvety, and fruity notes typical of this type of noble wood maturation.
