ARDBEG - Supernova - Astral Release - 53.8%
Ardbeg is an iconic distillery located on the island of Islay, in Scotland. Recognized as one of the oldest distilleries on this prestigious island, it enjoys worldwide fame for its among the most peated and intense whiskies. Ardbeg distinguished itself by being the first distillery to experiment with aging in space: in 2011, part of its production was sent to the International Space Station to study the impact of weightlessness on aromas and maturation, making Ardbeg a pioneer of innovation in the whisky world.
Whisky production on this historic site dates back to 1798, with commercialization beginning in 1815, the same year as its illustrious neighbor Laphroaig. Ardbeg quickly generated significant enthusiasm, fueled by strong demand for its exceptional spirits, notably used in renowned blends. However, from 1838, the distillery went through a long period marked by changes of ownership and financial difficulties, leading to its closure in 1981. The partial reopening in 1989, with production limited to only two months per year, preceded its decisive purchase in 1997 by Glenmorangie. Today, Ardbeg is an integral part of the luxury group LVMH, through its Glenmorangie group label.
Ardbeg's two traditional stills produce about one million liters of alcohol per year, exclusively as Single Malt. The whisky is mainly aged in Bourbon casks, with additional finishing in selected Sherry casks. Ardbeg is known for a strongly peated profile, but stands out by the absence of the maritime character typical of many Islay whiskies. Its unique aromatic signature combines powerful smoke, subtle spicy notes, and balanced sweetness.
Ardbeg Supernova Astral Release is an exceptional limited edition, famous for its extraordinary peat level for the distillery, reaching 100 ppm (parts per million). This whisky is named in tribute to the constellation of complex aromas present in the bottle, symbolized on its back. With 18,000 bottles produced, this prestigious expression follows the exclusive Committee Release edition launched in 2009, highly prized by collectors and connoisseurs.
