THE BALVENIE - Double Wood - 17 years - 43%
\nThe prestigious Balvenie Distillery is nestled in the heart of the legendary Speyside region in Scotland. It is one of the three famous distilleries located on the iconic Dufftown site owned by William Grant, alongside Glenfiddich and Kininvie. After a twenty-year career at the Mortlach distillery, William Grant purchased land near Balvenie Castle and designed the plans for his own distillery. Construction began in the autumn of 1886, and in 1892, the conversion of an 18th-century manor into a distillery started. The first distillation took place on May 1, 1893, marking the beginning of a legend. Despite their geographical proximity and similar methods, the three Dufftown distilleries produce Single Malt whiskies with unique identities. Historically the main supplier for William Grant blends, Balvenie now focuses its production on exceptional Single Malts, with a small portion still contributing to the renowned Monkey Shoulder blend. The Clos des Spiritueux distillery is particularly recognized for its selection of expressions matured in various types of wood, revealing an incomparable aromatic richness.
\nThe role of Malt Master at Balvenie is held by David C. Stewart MBE, an iconic figure in whisky. Joining the distillery in 1962 at the age of 17, he has dedicated over 54 years to the art of Scottish whisky. A passionate innovator, he revolutionized production techniques, notably perfecting the art of "cask finishes", a method that offers unique complexity and aromatic depth. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, David Stewart was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2016 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, highlighting his major influence in the malt whisky world.
\nThe Balvenie DoubleWood 17 years old is a masterpiece of balance and finesse. Its initial maturation takes place in American oak casks, which bring sweet notes of vanilla and caramel. It is then transferred for a second maturation in European oak sherry casks, enriching the whisky with rich and deep nuances such as dried fruits, precious wood, and spicy touches. This two-step process shapes a complex and perfectly harmonious aromatic profile, appreciated by connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike.
