THE BALVENIE - Tun 1509 - Batch 7 - 52.40%
The Balvenie Distillery is located in the prestigious Speyside region, in the heart of Scotland, the famous birthplace of exceptional single malts. It is one of the three iconic distilleries situated on the Dufftown site owned by the legendary William Grant company, alongside Glenfiddich and Kininvie. After more than twenty years of experience, William Grant left his position at the Mortlach distillery to acquire land near Balvenie Castle. He then designed the detailed plans for his own distillery and laid the first stone in the autumn of 1886. At the beginning of 1892, the transformation of an 18th-century manor, known as Balvenie New House, into a distillery began. After 15 months of work, the first distillation symbolically took place on May 1, 1893, in the new Balvenie distillery. Although the three distilleries on the Dufftown site use the same pure water and carefully selected malted barley, as well as similar production methods, each develops a unique character and distinct aromatic profile. Historically, Balvenie mainly supplied whiskies for William Grant's prestigious blends, but in recent years, production has evolved to meet the growing demand for its exceptional Balvenie Single Malt, with a very limited quantity reserved for the famous Monkey Shoulder blend. The distillery is particularly recognized for its expertise in finishing its whiskies, matured in a wide variety of noble casks with diverse essences, which bring complexity and aromatic richness to each expression.
The iconic Malt Master of Balvenie is David C. Stewart MBE, a living legend of Scottish whisky. Starting his career in 1962 at only 17 years old, he dedicated over 54 years of his life to The Balvenie distillery, becoming a global reference thanks to his revolutionary aging and blending techniques. David C. Stewart is renowned for his unparalleled expertise in the art of cask finishing, which transformed the way to reveal the full complexity of single malts. His legacy continues within the distillery. In 2016, he was honored with an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) awarded by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition of his immense contribution to the whisky industry and Scottish culture.
The first editions of the famous "Tun" series take their name from David C. Stewart's favorite historic marrying tun, called Tun 1401. Each batch of this exclusive series is blended according to a rigorous selection of the best casks available in the distillery's rare archives. Every year, David creates a unique blend that subtly combines character, depth, and aromatic complexity. The seventh edition of the Balvenie Tun 1509 is a masterpiece composed of 21 casks meticulously chosen: 4 American oak casks, 10 generous sherry butts of 480 to 520 liters, and 7 classic hogsheads of 250 liters. These precious whiskies have patiently matured for three years in the traditional marrying tun Tun 1509, allowing perfect integration of aromas and unparalleled harmony.
