SPRINGBANK - 12 years - Cask Strength - 55.3%
Springbank is one of the last two iconic distilleries in the historic Campbeltown region, located on the picturesque Kintyre peninsula in southwest Scotland. Renowned for its tradition and artisanal craftsmanship, this distillery produces exceptional Single Malt whiskies under three distinct labels, each with unique aromatic profiles: Springbank, Longrow, and Hazelburn.
Founded in 1828 by brothers Archibald and Hugh Mitchell, Springbank is the 14th officially licensed distillery in Campbeltown. By 1934, only Springbank and Glen Scotia remained, bearing witness to the region's rich heritage. Today, it proudly remains owned by the direct descendants of the founders, ensuring family continuity and an unwavering commitment to quality.
What sets Springbank apart is its total control over production, unique in Scotland: all processes are carried out on-site, from traditional barley malting to final bottling. This exceptional mastery allows the distillery to create three truly authentic whisky styles, each expression influenced by the selected casks and the local maritime climate.
Springbank editions blend peated and air-dried malts and are distilled two and a half times, giving these whiskies remarkable complexity and aromatic richness. In comparison, Hazelburn is triple distilled using only air-dried malt, while Longrow is produced with traditional double distillation. The intensely peated versions are marketed under the Longrow brand, inspired by the pioneering desire to demonstrate as early as 1973 that Islay-style Single Malts could also be made on the Scottish mainland.
Hazelburn, bottled from 2005 onwards, stands out for its triple distillation and absence of peat in the malting, offering a softer and more floral whisky. Its name pays tribute to a former flagship Campbeltown distillery, the largest in town at its peak, operating from 1825 to 1925 and taken over by Mitchell & Co. as early as 1920.
Furthermore, the parent company JA Mitchell & Sons revitalized the Glengyle distillery in 2004, producing single malts under the Kilkerran brand, and the group also owns the renowned independent bottler Cadenhead's, thus enriching its offering and influence in the world of quality whisky.
