Hampden - 8 years 2017 <>H Magnum Series - n°3 60% - Mise Velier
Founded in 1753 in Trelawny, the Hampden Estate distillery embodies the excellence of Jamaican rum thanks to its mastery of long fermentations and pot still distillation. This tradition allows it to produce rums of unparalleled aromatic intensity and complexity. The Magnum Series, developed with the expertise of Velier, combines this historical know-how with the artistic vision of Magnum Photos. For this third installment, photographer Cristina de Middel has captured the spirit of the distillery through immersive visuals, highlighting the authenticity and vibrant personality of this exceptional rum, available at Clos des Spiritueux, the benchmark for fine spirits.
This 2017 vintage Hampden 8-year-old rum has benefited from eight years of full tropical aging, primarily in ex-bourbon barrels, giving it a rare depth. Bottled at cask strength (60%), it bears the famous "H" mark, also known as Diamond H, recognized for its high ester content (approximately 900 to 1000g/hlap at distillation). This limited edition offers a pure and powerful expression of the Jamaican style, enhanced by Velier's rigorous approach and available exclusively at Clos des Spiritueux, specialists in fine Jamaican rums.
On the nose, an explosion of ripe tropical fruits—roasted pineapple, dried banana—intertwines with notes of fine varnish, resin, and green olive, the signature of high esters prized by lovers of intense rums. With aeration, hints of candied citrus, cocoa, and a touch of medicinal character emerge, promising a beautiful complexity. On the palate, the attack is ample and lively thanks to the natural proof; the texture is oily yet precise. The mid-palate seduces with a marriage of roasted sugarcane, orange marmalade, and salty toffee, offering energy and length. The finish is prodigiously long and dry, unfolding rancio, nuts, bitter citrus zest, and a subtle smoky touch.
For an ideal tasting experience, serve this 8-year-old Hampden neat after a few minutes of aeration in a tulip glass, or add a splash of spring water to fully explore its aromatic range. It beautifully complements roast pork, lightly sweetened duck à l'orange, and mature cheeses such as cheddar or 24-month aged Comté. At the end of a meal, it pairs perfectly with a lightly sweetened chocolate fondant, a walnut tart, or even roasted pineapple with spices.
