CHARTREUSE - Green - Jeroboam Format - 2024 Bottling - 55%
The Order of the Chartreuse has existed for over 500 years. In 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery located in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript detailing an "Elixir" called the "Elixir of Long Life." This precious document, probably written by a 16th-century alchemist, demonstrated a profound knowledge of herbs and the skilled art of assembling, infusing, and macerating 130 different plants to create a perfectly balanced and unique tonic. The complexity of this recipe made it difficult to understand, and only a few extracts were initially used at Vauvert. At the beginning of the 18th century, the manuscript was transferred to the Order's Mother House, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. It was there that the monastery's apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, managed to unravel the mystery, writing in 1737 the practical formula that still defines the preparation of this elixir today, officially established in 1764. In 1903, the Chartreuse distillery was nationalized by the French government and the monks were expelled. Following the company's bankruptcy in 1929, the monks recovered the Chartreuse brand and returned to their historic distillery built in 1860 at Fourvoirie, near the monastery, to restart production of the authentic Chartreuse liqueurs. Unfortunately, in 1935, a landslide almost completely destroyed Fourvoirie, forcing the transfer of production to Voiron, where production continues with rigor and passion to this day.
The rigorous selection, grinding, and blending of the secret herbs as well as medicinal plants, essential components of the liqueurs, are carried out only by two monks directly within the monastery, thus guaranteeing ancestral know-how and unparalleled quality. Once meticulously assembled, these ingredients are transported to Voiron where they undergo slow maceration in a specially selected high-quality alcohol. Distillation then follows with extreme precision before the liqueurs age for several years in huge oak barrels. These barrels rest in the aging cellar, recognized as one of the oldest and longest maturation cellars in the world, thus giving Chartreuse its unique character and exceptional aromatic richness.
The Green Chartreuse, a true masterpiece of monastic herbalism, is made from 130 plants, herbs, and spices carefully selected and macerated in a high-quality grape alcohol. It then undergoes a distillation process and long aging in oak barrels, which gives it its bright green color, complex and unique taste, as well as a high alcohol content of 55%, making it an intense and refined liqueur, acclaimed by connoisseurs worldwide.
