CHARTREUSE - Elixir Liqueur 1605 - 2023 Edition - 56% ABV
The Order of the Chartreuse has existed for over 500 years. In 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery in Vauvert, a charming suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient mysterious manuscript containing the recipe for an "Elixir" nicknamed the "Elixir of Long Life." This manuscript, likely the work of an enlightened 16th-century alchemist, demonstrated profound knowledge of rare herbs and a unique talent for assembling, infusing, and macerating 130 different plants to create a tonic of exceptional harmony. The extreme complexity of this formula allowed only partial understanding at Vauvert. It was not until the early 18th century that the manuscript was sent to the Order's motherhouse, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the majestic mountains near Grenoble. The monastery's apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, managed to unlock the secret and, in 1737, established the practical formula, finalized in 1764. In 1903, the Chartreuse distillery was nationalized by the French government, and the monks were expelled. However, facing the 1929 bankruptcy, the monks reclaimed the Chartreuse brand, regained their distillery built in 1860 at Fourvoirie near the monastery, and relaunched authentic Chartreuse liqueur production. In 1935, a landslide almost completely destroyed Fourvoirie, forcing production to move to Voiron, where it remains today.
The rigorous selection, meticulous grinding, and precise blending of the secret herbs, aromatic plants, and medicinal plants used in creating the liqueurs still take place within the monastery, in the expert hands of two devoted monks. Once assembled, these precious ingredients are sent to Voiron, where they are carefully macerated in a rigorously selected alcohol, then distilled with the greatest expertise. These unique liqueurs finally benefit from prolonged aging, sometimes over several years, in immense oak barrels, in a maturation cellar famous for some of the longest and most refined aging processes in the world.
The Elixir Liqueur 1605 was specially created in 2005 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Manuscript, thus symbolizing the excellence and timeless tradition of this exceptional beverage.
