CHARTREUSE - Green - Jeroboam Format - 2023 Bottling - 55% ABV
The Order of the Chartreuse had existed for over 500 years when, in 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript describing an "Elixir" nicknamed the "Elixir of Long Life." This mysterious document was likely the work of a 16th-century alchemist, possessing deep knowledge of herbs and the expertise to assemble, infuse, and macerate the 130 plants it contained, to create a tonic of remarkable finesse and balance. The recipe, extremely complex, was only partially understood and exploited at Vauvert. In the early 18th century, this manuscript was transferred to the Mother House of the Order, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. It was there that the Monastery's Apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, succeeded in uncovering the secret and wrote the practical formula of this Elixir in 1737, officially recorded in 1764. In 1903, the Chartreuse distillery was nationalized by the French government, causing the monks to go into exile. However, following the distillery's bankruptcy in 1929, the monks recovered the Chartreuse brand, rejoined their distillery built in 1860 at Fourvoirie, near the monastery, and resumed authentic production of the true Chartreuse liqueurs. In 1935, a landslide almost completely destroyed Fourvoirie; production was then transferred to Voiron, where it continues to this day.
The unique expertise of Clos des Spiritueux highlights the careful selection, delicate grinding, and precise blending of secret herbs, plants, and other medicinal botanicals used in the production of the liqueurs by two monks within the monastery walls. Once this precious blend is made, the ingredients are transported to Voiron where they macerate in a rigorously selected quality alcohol before undergoing artisanal distillation. These exceptional liqueurs then age for several years in gigantic oak barrels, resting in a maturation cellar renowned for housing the longest and most meticulous aging processes in the world.
The Green Chartreuse is made from 130 different plants, herbs, and spices, meticulously macerated in pure grape alcohol. After distillation, it patiently ages in oak barrels for several years, acquiring its bright green color, complex organoleptic profile, and remarkable strength at 55% alcohol by volume. This legendary spirit is distinguished by its perfect balance between power, vegetal freshness, and spicy aromatic nuances, offering an unparalleled tasting experience.
