CHICHIBU - Vintage 2014 - 7 years - Bourbon Barrel 2nd Fill Ex Peated Single Peated Cask No. 3812 - Bottled in 2022 - 64.30% ABV
Ichiro’s Malt is an essential reference in the world of Japanese whisky thanks to its reputation as an exceptional independent bottler. Founded by Ichiro Akuto, this house is located in Chichibu, an iconic place just 100 km northwest of Tokyo, where it operates two small traditional stills. Akuto's distillation expertise is rooted in a prestigious family heritage: his grandfather was a master sake brewer before founding the Hanyu distillery in 1625, which obtained a license for whisky production in 1941. The passion and know-how were passed down by his father, who acquired two Scottish stills capable of producing about 400 barrels. Despite economic difficulties in Japan around 2000, marked by a decline in sake consumption, Ichiro Akuto managed to turn this crisis into a major opportunity by taking over the stills and maturing whisky barrels to develop his own unique creations.
Today, Ichiro Akuto actively pursues the excellence in distillation inherited from the Hanyu distillery, establishing himself as one of the most visionary and ambitious craftsmen of premium Japanese whisky. About 4,000 barrels, including Sherry, wine, and Bourbon casks, are currently maturing. Moreover, Ichiro Akuto innovates by experimenting with the local cultivation of Japanese barley to create an authentically Japanese whisky, fully reflecting the richness and diversity of its unique terroir.
This rare edition of Chichibu was distilled in 2014 and aged for 7 years in a single cask (#3812) that previously contained peated Bourbon in its second fill (Second Fill Bourbon Barrel Ex Peated). In total, only 188 bottles were produced, making it a highly sought-after collector's item for enthusiasts and connoisseurs of exceptional Japanese whisky.
