MIYAGIKYO - Discovery - Peated - Bottled in 2021 - 48%
Nikka Whisky Distilling Company, located in Japan, is an iconic reference created by Masataka Taketsuru, recognized as the founding father of Japanese whisky. The son of a sake brewer, after extensive university studies in chemistry, he refined his craft in renowned Scottish distilleries. In 1920, he returned to Japan with his Scottish wife, Rita, to launch the production of the first Japanese whisky and then founded the Yoichi distillery as well as the parent company Nikka. Today, Nikka also includes distilleries dedicated to the production of Shochu – Japanese spirits distilled from rice, barley, and sweet potato – as well as facilities producing cider brandy and apple wine. In 2001, the company joined the influential Asahi Breweries group.
The Miyagikyo distillery, built in 1969 as the second Nikka distillery, aims to create a whisky with a character distinct from that of Yoichi. Located in a misty valley surrounded by majestic mountains, at the confluence of two rivers with pure waters, Miyagikyo benefits from exceptional water sourced from the Nikkawa river, the main source for the distillery. This Miyagikyo single malt is renowned for its soft, fruity, and elegant profile. Unlike the peatier style of Yoichi, Miyagikyo uses a smaller amount of peated malt and distills its whisky in steam-heated pot stills indirectly and at low temperatures, promoting finesse and aromatic balance.
This unique edition of Miyagikyo Single Malt is part of the prestigious "Nikka Discovery" series, offering an immersion into Nikka's various production experiments. This expression highlights the richness and diversity of ingredients selected at the distillery, composed exclusively of lots of peated malts. This bold choice pleasantly unsettles the familiar image of Miyagikyo as a "light and fruity" whisky, delivering a surprising and captivating sensory experience.
