MIYAGIKYO - 15 years - 45% ABV
Nikka Whisky Distilling Company, an iconic Japanese distillery, is located in Japan and was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, globally recognized as the founding father of high-quality Japanese whisky. The son of a sake master brewer, Taketsuru first studied chemistry at university before perfecting his craft at several prestigious distilleries in Scotland. He then returned to Japan in 1920, accompanied by his Scottish wife, Rita, to pass on his expertise. After contributing to the creation of the very first Japanese whisky with the company that would become Suntory (Kotobukiya Limited), he founded the Yoichi distillery in 1934 as well as the parent company Nikka, pioneers of the Japanese whisky industry. In addition to their iconic single malts, Nikka also produces shochu – a traditional spirit distilled from various noble ingredients such as rice, barley, and sweet potato – as well as refined cider brandies and apple wines. In 2001, the Asahi Breweries group acquired Nikka, further strengthening its international presence.
The Miyagikyo distillery, inaugurated in 1969, is Nikka's second distillery, intended to create a whisky with characteristics distinct from those of Yoichi. Nestled in a misty and preserved valley, surrounded by majestic mountains at the confluence of two crystal-clear rivers, the distillery benefits from an exceptional pure water source known as Nikkawa. This tasty and remarkably high-quality water convinced Taketsuru to establish the distillery in this unique location. The Miyagikyo single malt is distinguished by its soft, fruity, and refined profile, resulting from rigorous mastery of distillation. Lightly peated compared to Yoichi, it is produced in pot stills heated by indirect steam at low temperatures, ensuring finesse and aromatic complexity in every expression. This whisky is an ideal choice for enthusiasts seeking elegance and subtlety in an authentic Japanese single malt.
