Elixir Distillers was founded as a specialist in premium beverages, Speciality Drinks, in 1999 by brothers Sukhinder and Raj Singh, who also created the renowned online sales platform Whisky Exchange the same year. In 2017, the company evolved to adopt the name Elixir Distillers, reflecting its commitment to offering the finest spirits. Oliver Chilton expertly oversees daily strategic decisions at Elixir Distillers, including the careful purchase of casks, rigorous selection, harmonious blending, and precise bottling of all editions, including the prestigious Black Tot range. Historically, from the earliest sea voyages, the Royal Navy carried alcohol on board for its crew and trade exchanges. At that time, water was not potable, and options such as wine or beer did not preserve well at sea, making spirits an ideal alternative due to their long preservation in wooden barrels. In 1970, a historic decision by the British Parliament ended the daily rum ration, citing concerns related to new technologies on ships. July 31, 1970, now commemorated as Black Tot Day, was the official day this tradition ended, marking the close of an era with even symbolic funerals held for "the day the rum died." Some rum reserves were carefully kept in "pitchers" for exceptional events such as the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.
The 2022 edition of the Master Blender’s Reserve series by Black Tot is an exceptional blend combining the previous Master Blender’s Reserve, carefully aged in Sherry casks since Black Tot Day, with rums from the emblematic terroirs of Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad, and Barbados. This unique cuvée expresses the full richness and complexity of maritime tradition rums, offering a powerful character while revealing delicate notes derived from its aging in superior quality casks.
