Ichiro’s Malt is a world-renowned independent bottler of Japanese whisky. Founded by Ichiro Akuto, this company is located in an authentic and intimate setting in Chichibu, a charming town just 100 km northwest of Tokyo, equipped with only two small traditional stills. Ichiro Akuto’s mastery of distillation is rooted in family heritage. His grandfather was a pioneer, running a historic sake brewery, the Hanyu distillery, established in 1625. In 1941, he obtained the official license to produce whisky, laying the foundation for a passionate lineage. Akuto’s father continued this tradition by purchasing two Scottish stills capable of producing about 400 barrels of whisky per year. However, the Japanese economic crisis of the 2000s, coupled with a decline in sake consumption, forced the family to sell their business. Turning this challenge into a unique opportunity, Ichiro Akuto recovered the stills and maturing barrels, thus saving a precious heritage of Japanese whisky.
Today, Ichiro Akuto perpetuates the ancestral techniques learned at the Hanyu distillery while innovating with passion. He is recognized as one of the most innovative and ambitious Japanese distillers. Currently, about 4,000 whisky barrels, including Sherry, wine, and Bourbon casks, are patiently aging. Moreover, Ichiro leads avant-garde projects, such as cultivating local barley, to create a truly authentic, 100% Japanese, exceptional whisky.
This exclusive edition was bottled in tribute to the 65th anniversary of La Maison du Whisky. This exceptional whisky was distilled in 2014 and aged in a third-use peated Bourbon cask (#3814), offering a rich and complex profile with a delicate peated influence. The label features the artwork titled "Flower," created by contemporary artist Nakajima Hiroyuki, highlighting the perfect marriage between art and whisky. This rare edition is limited to only 212 bottles, making it a treasure not to be missed by seasoned enthusiasts and collectors.
