ARDBEG - 25 years - 46% ABV
Ardbeg is an iconic distillery located in the heart of the island of Islay, in Scotland, renowned as one of the oldest and most prestigious in this region famous for its peated whiskies. Ardbeg enjoys worldwide fame for producing some of the most intense and peated whiskies ever made, with a unique aromatic richness blending smoke, spices, and sweetness. Innovative, the distillery made history by being the first whisky to travel into space: in 2011, part of its production was sent to the International Space Station to study the impact of weightlessness on the aging process and flavor complexity.
Ardbeg's production dates back to 1798, and its first commercial whisky was released in 1815, the same year as its famous neighbor Laphroaig. From the beginning, Ardbeg experienced rapid success, with strong demand contributing notably to the creation of many renowned blends. However, from 1838, the distillery went through a turbulent period marked by multiple ownership changes and financial difficulties, leading to its closure in 1981. After reopening in 1989 with minimal activity of two months per year, it regained full momentum in 1997 thanks to its acquisition by Glenmorangie. Today, Ardbeg is part of the prestigious LVMH group through the Glenmorangie division, thus consolidating its position of excellence in the global luxury spirits market.
Ardbeg's two traditional stills produce about one million liters of alcohol per year exclusively as Single Malt. Maturation is mainly in Bourbon casks, complemented by finishing in Sherry casks which add finesse and depth to the aromas. Ardbeg is distinguished by a strongly peated profile (over 50-55 ppm), characterized by powerful smoky intensity, distinct spicy notes, and a gentle, slightly sweet roundness. Unlike other Islay whiskies, it does not have an overly iodine or maritime taste but offers a complex and subtly balanced tasting experience.
Ardbeg 25 years is an exceptional edition bottled from rare casks carefully selected among those filled during the most difficult periods in the distillery's history. This mature whisky thus offers unique depth and richness, true witnesses to Ardbeg's ancestral craftsmanship.
