Bourbon - Michter's US 1 - Sour Mash - 43%
The prestigious Michter’s Fort Nelson distillery is located in the historic Fort Nelson building, situated in the heart of Louisville, United States. This iconic four-story building, completed in 1890, was originally part of the Nelson defensive fort, erected by the first settlers of Louisville in the early 1780s. Acquired in early 2012, this site was meticulously renovated to house the Michter’s distillery, becoming the first brand to reestablish a functioning distillery right in downtown Louisville, marking a major turning point in the history of American whiskey.
Michter’s stands out for its commitment to the exceptional quality of its raw materials: using only non-GMO American grains, rigorously graded according to the strict standards of the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) as category US No. 1, the highest quality level for grains available in the United States. These noble grains — corn, rye, barley — are delivered directly to the production site in Shively (Louisville). They are then carefully tested in Michter’s internal laboratory before being ground with their iconic “Michter’s Cage Mill,” a machine specially designed and custom-built by Stedman to ensure optimal milling and preserve all the organoleptic qualities of the grains.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Michter’s Original Sour Mash Whiskey established itself as the flagship product of the house. Its “Sour Mash” designation refers to a unique fermentation process where part of the fermented mash from a previous batch is used to inoculate the next fermentation, thus imparting complexity and aromatic consistency to the whiskey. Thanks to its exceptional grain selection, this whiskey cannot be strictly classified as either Rye Whiskey or Bourbon, giving it a distinctive character. After a prolonged absence from the market since 1989, the Michter's Original Sour Mash made a triumphant return in 2012, incorporated into the prestigious U.S. 1 range.
