The La Favorite distillery is one of the last iconic independent distilleries in Martinique, alongside Neisson. Founded in 1842 on the ruins of an old sugar factory called Les Jambettes, it took the name La Favorite in 1851. In 1909, Henri Dormoy acquired it and initiated significant improvements to convert the sugar factory into a true distillery. After some ups and downs related to Albert Dormoy's passion for gambling, Henri's son, La Favorite's activity was interrupted around 1938. It was only in 1956 that André, his younger brother, took over the distillery and completely renovated it. Today, La Favorite cultivates 60 hectares of sugarcane and also sources from small local producers. Remarkably, it still operates entirely thanks to a steam engine dating from 1906, still functional. The vesou (cane wine), obtained by prolonged fermentation of cane juice for up to 72 hours, is distilled in two Creole columns: a copper column used since 1957 and a more modern one dating from 1986.
This 2019 La Favorite cuvée tells a beautiful collaboration between the company Les Frères de la Côte — renowned for their sailing transport and dynamic aging of rums — and the La Favorite distillery. After a 7-month rest accompanied by slow reduction, this agricole rum from the 2018 harvest was carefully prepared for a unique journey. In February 2019, the white rum barrels were placed in 5 oak barrels that had contained Bourbon. For the second consecutive year, the schooner Tres Hombres stopped in Martinique to load the authentic flavors of this island of a thousand flowers. During 6 months of an entirely sail-powered crossing, this exceptional blend benefited from dynamic maritime aging, giving it a remarkable aromatic evolution and a golden robe of great elegance.
