Nikka Whisky Distilling Company is an iconic distillery located in Japan, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, recognized as the founding father of Japanese whisky. Descended from a family of sake brewers, Masataka Taketsuru studied chemistry at university before perfecting his craft at several renowned Scottish distilleries. He returned to Japan in 1920 accompanied by his Scottish wife, Rita, bringing with him unique expertise that would revolutionize whisky production in Japan. After contributing to the creation of the first Japanese whisky with the company that would become Suntory (then Kotobukiya Limited), he independently established the Yoichi distillery as well as the parent company Nikka. Nikka is also known for its distilleries specializing in the production of Shochu (distilled alcohol made from various ingredients such as rice, barley, and sweet potato), as well as its facilities dedicated to producing cider brandy and apple wine. In 2001, Nikka joined the Asahi Breweries group, a global leader in the alcoholic beverages sector.
The Yoichi distillery, founded in 1934 and operational since 1936, is ideally located by the sea and surrounded by mountains on three sides, evoking the landscape of the Scottish Highlands. This site benefits from a cool climate with optimal humidity, pure air, and fresh water, while the proximity to the ocean deeply influences the maturation of the whiskies. The sea breeze imparts a unique salty signature, while the traditional direct coal distillation gives the whisky intense peaty notes and an inimitable smoky character, emblematic of Yoichi.
