The Akkeshi Distillery, a true benchmark of exceptional Japanese whisky, is located in Hokkaido, in the wild and preserved north of Japan. Founded by Keiichi Toita, visionary president and director of Kenten Co. Ltd, the distillery embodies the revival of artisan Japanese spirits. Its story began in 2013 with aging trials of spirits from iconic Japanese distilleries, before the production site was established in 2015 in the heart of a unique wetland area, characterized by a thick layer of peat and a soft subsoil extending over 50 meters. This geographical configuration required the use of the innovative Columbus construction method, which consists of replacing the soil under the foundations with expanded polystyrene to ensure the building's stability.
One year later, the distillery received support from Scottish experts from Forsyths, who came to install stills and efficient equipment essential for the production of single malt whisky according to the strictest standards of traditional Scottish distillation methods. The team's ambition is to produce a Japanese Single Malt rivaling the great Islay Malts, renowned for their aromatic richness, peaty character, and complexity. The first Akkeshi Single Malt whisky was born in 2018, marking the distillery's entry into the exclusive club of great Japanese whisky producers.
Akkeshi Ritto marks the fifth flagship edition of the prestigious "24 Solar Term Series", inspired by the ancient Asian lunar calendar, paced by 24 solar seasons. The term "Ritto" means "beginning of winter," a period that coincides with the Japanese tradition Shichi-go-san, a festival celebrating the growth and health of children, placed under the protection of the fertility deity. The bottle's label pays tribute to the traditional design of the famous Chitose candies, enjoyed during this festive event. Every detail reflects the craftsmanship, tradition, and innovation that define Akkeshi whiskies.
