CHARTREUSE - Green - Jeroboam Format - 55%
The Order of the Chartreuse already had over 500 years of history when, in 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery located in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript revealing the secret recipe of an "Elixir" nicknamed the "Elixir of Long Life." This mysterious document, probably the work of a 16th-century alchemist, showed deep knowledge of herbs and exceptional skill in assembling, infusing, and macerating 130 carefully selected plants, thus creating a perfectly balanced tonic with remarkable virtues.
The complexity of this recipe meant that only certain extracts were understood and used at Vauvert. At the beginning of the 18th century, the precious manuscript was transferred to the Order's Mother House, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. It was there that the Monastery's Apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, unraveled the mystery and, in 1737, wrote the practical formula allowing the preparation of this elixir, finalized in 1764. In 1903, the Chartreuse distillery was nationalized by the French government, and the monks were forced to leave. However, after the 1929 bankruptcy, they recovered the Chartreuse brand and resumed artisanal production of the genuine Chartreuse liqueurs in their historic distillery built in 1860 at Fourvoirie, near the monastery. Following a landslide in 1935 that severely damaged Fourvoirie, production was transferred to Voiron, its current and world-renowned production site.
The rigorous selection, grinding, and blending of the secret herbs, medicinal plants, and spices intended for the liqueurs' production is carried out directly in the monastery by two specialist monks. Once the perfect blend is obtained, the ingredients are transported to Voiron where they macerate in high-quality alcohol before being carefully distilled. These rare and unique liqueurs then benefit from prolonged aging in majestic oak barrels, stored in a cellar with exceptional conditions, renowned for housing the longest and most complex maturations in the world.
The Green Chartreuse is thus made from 130 different plants, herbs, and spices, meticulously macerated in pure grape alcohol. It is then distilled and aged for several years in oak barrels, giving this exceptional spirit its bright green color, complex aromatic profile, and unique strength with a high alcohol content of 55%. This rare liqueur is a true icon of French spirit heritage, offering an incomparable tasting experience for discerning enthusiasts.
