VAN WINKLE - 13 years - Family Reserve from Pappy Van Winkle's Private stock - 47.80%
Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve is a prestigious Bourbon brand recognized worldwide, owned by the "Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery" company. This exceptional bourbon has been distilled and bottled since 2002 by the Sazerac group at the famous Buffalo Trace Distillery located in Frankfort, Kentucky, the historic epicenter of American Bourbon. The story begins in 1893 when Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., at only 18 years old, started his career as a salesman at W.L. Weller & Sons, a renowned alcohol wholesaler. Fifteen years later, he and a partner bought the company, laying the foundation for a unique legacy. In 1910, they acquired the A. Ph. Stitzel distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, founded in 1872 and specialized in "Sour Mash" whiskey. After a hiatus imposed by Prohibition, the Van Winkle brand was reintroduced to the market in 1972 before being temporarily discontinued in 1991. This artisanal bourbon is mainly made from high-quality corn and aged in new, toasted American oak barrels, a traditional method ensuring remarkable aromatic complexity. Its uniqueness lies in the use of wheat as a secondary ingredient, replacing the usual rye, and a subtle addition of malted barley, giving this whiskey a smooth texture and a long, velvety finish.
