Hampden - 1753 - 46%
Clos des Spiritueux presents to you Hampden Estate, one of the oldest and most prestigious sugar plantations in Jamaica, globally renowned for the exceptional quality of its artisanal rums. Founded in 1753, this historic estate belonged to Mr. Archibald Stirling from Scotland. In 1779, Mr. Stirling had the Hampden Great House built, whose ground floor served as a rum warehouse until the early 20th century. The famous Farquarson family operated this sugar and rum estate until 2003, before the Jamaica Sugar Company became the owner. Known for its lands among the most fertile for sugarcane in Jamaica, Hampden Estate produces the largest quantity of sugar from milled cane in the region.
Originally, the prestigious Hampden rums were exclusively exported to Europe, notably England and Scotland. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd, a company owned by the Hussey family, acquired the estate through a public offer during the divestment of Jamaica Sugar Company's assets, then under government control. Since this acquisition, Everglades Farms has made significant investments in the rum distillery, creating many jobs in the town of Trelawny and providing essential infrastructure to more than 17 local communities and schools, strengthening regional sustainable development.
The water used in the production of Hampden Estate rums comes from an exclusive pure mountain water collection system, not from traditional underground aquifers, ensuring optimal quality and full respect for the environment. After use, the water is returned clean and non-polluting to nature. Fermentation is a long and natural process, using exclusively indigenous yeasts specific to this unique terroir. Hampden Estate is among the last distilleries in the world to practice batch distillation in its historic stills, with four operational distillation units, including a 1960 John Dore still with a capacity of 7,560 liters.
The rums undergo extended tropical aging in Jamaica's warm and humid climate for more than 7 years, equivalent to 25 years of aging in a European environment. Produced, aged, and bottled without any additives, no added sugar, tannins, caramel, or glycerin, Hampden rums demonstrate exceptional purity and authenticity, recognized by connoisseurs worldwide.
1753 is an exceptional rum made according to traditional and partially secret methods passed down since the 18th century. Crafted with remarkably pure spring water and natural yeasts, it is distilled in a batch still and then aged three years in a tropical climate. This rum displays remarkable richness with 476.9 gr/hlpa of esters, giving it intense aromatic complexity and a unique taste profile, ideal for discerning enthusiasts seeking authenticity and history.
