The Shinshu Distillery is an integral part of Hombo Shuzo (also known as Hombo Brewing Co.) and markets its products under the prestigious Mars Whisky brand. Founded in 1872 by Honbu Matsusa, Hombo Shuzo is located at 800 meters altitude in the charming village of Miyata, situated on the Japanese island of Kyushu. In 1949, the company obtained a license to produce whisky at the Kagoshima distillery before transferring its production to the Shinshu distillery. Due to reduced demand in the 1990s, production was temporarily suspended in 1992 but resumed continuously from 2012 onward. The most famous expressions from this distillery include the remarkable Komagatake, a Single Malt named after the majestic nearby mountain, as well as the Mars Maltage Cosmo, launched in July 2015 in tribute to the distillery's unique location and the spectacular night sky view from Mount Komagatake.

The The Y.A. is an exceptional blended malt, resulting from a blend between the Shinshu Distillery and the Tsunuki Distillery, before being aged in warehouses located in Yakushima. The hot and tropical climate of this island, combined with a particularly high humidity level, gives this whisky a unique maturation, promoting a higher evaporation rate called the angel's share, which greatly enriches the aromatic complexity of the final product.
