The Foursquare Rum Distillery (and Heritage Park) is located in the south of the beautiful Barbados, a historic cradle of rum. This iconic distillery belongs to the prestigious Seale family, which has five generations of expertise in the ancestral art of rum production since 1820. Recognized as one of the oldest and most respected rum trading houses in Barbados, Foursquare bears witness to a rich tradition and unique know-how. At the time, Reginald Leon Seale, faced with Barbados' legal constraints prohibiting the direct sale of rum to consumers under excise laws, revolutionized the market by creating a distribution company in Bridgetown in the 1900s: the birth of the iconic R. L. Seale brand. Between 1962 and 1993, the iconic rums of ESA Field and Alleyne Arthur, such as Old Brigand, Taylor’s Falernum, and Doorly’s, enriched their portfolio. To optimize their presence, the ESA Field and Old Brigand brands were destined for the local market, where they enjoyed strong popularity, while Doorly’s established itself as a major export brand. In 1995, under the visionary leadership of Sir David Seale, the family acquired an old sugar factory whose main building, dating from 1636, was in ruins. Thanks to this remarkable insight, the site became the Foursquare Distillery we know today. The distillery is equipped with a sophisticated three-column still, specialized in producing light rums, and a modern copper pot still perfectly suited for more complex rums. Each batch of rum is carefully distilled from fermented molasses in small quantities, usually 112 barrels, then aged according to the traditional tropical method. Aging takes place in large open-walled warehouses, in small American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels, mostly from a distillery located in Lynchburg, Tennessee, thus ensuring optimal maturation and an exceptional aromatic profile.
