MIYAGIKYO - Discovery - Aromatic Yeast - 47%
Nikka Whisky Distilling Company is an iconic distillery located in Japan, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, recognized as the true founding father of Japanese whisky. Coming from a family of sake brewers, he studied chemistry before refining his skills at several renowned distilleries in Scotland. In 1920, accompanied by his Scottish wife Rita, he returned to Japan with the ambition to create an exceptional whisky. After contributing to the success of the company that would later become Suntory (formerly Kotobukiya Limited) and crafting the very first Japanese whisky, he decided to venture independently by founding the Yoichi distillery as well as the parent company, Nikka. The company also owns facilities dedicated to the production of Shochu (a distillate made from various ingredients such as rice, barley, and sweet potato), as well as the manufacture of brandy based on cider and apple wine. In 2001, Nikka joined the Asahi Breweries group, thereby strengthening its international presence.
The Miyagikyo distillery, built in 1969, is the second distillery of Nikka intended to produce a whisky style distinct from that of Yoichi. Located in a misty valley surrounded by mountains, at the confluence of two crystal-clear rivers, it benefits from a pure water source whose exceptional quality immediately convinced Masataka Taketsuru to establish the distillery there. The river is named Nikkawa, a pleasant coincidence. The Miyagikyo Single Malt is distinguished by its soft and fruity profile, resulting from a malt that is slightly less peated than that used at Yoichi. Distillation is carried out in a still heated by indirect steam at low temperature, contributing to the unique aromatic finesse of this whisky.
This exclusive version of Miyagikyo Single Malt belongs to the prestigious "Nikka Discovery" series, which offers an exploration of different techniques and innovations in the whisky-making process at Nikka. This edition particularly highlights the unique aromas derived from the yeast carefully selected from Nikka's extensive collection of microbial cultures, thus bringing an unprecedented and complex aromatic richness.
