Glen Scotia - Double Cask - Demerara Rum Finish - Campbeltown - 46%
Glen Scotia is a prestigious distillery located in Campbeltown, on the picturesque Kintyre peninsula in Scotland. Founded in 1832 under the name Scotia by James Stewart, the town's mayor, and John Galbraith, the local provost, this iconic distillery has a rich and fascinating history. Until 1895, its founders managed it before it became in 1919 one of the founding members of the West Highland Malt Distilleries syndicate. This consortium brought together six Campbeltown distilleries to pool costs and protect their operations from potential closure.
In 1924, the Scotia distillery was acquired by Duncan MacCallum, founder of Glen Nevis. Forced to close temporarily in 1928, it reopened in 1930, but that same year, MacCallum, victim of a scam that wiped out his savings, tragically took his own life. The distillery was then bought by Bloch Brothers, who added "Glen" to its name, thus becoming Glen Scotia. Legend has it that MacCallum's ghost still haunts the distillery walls, adding a mysterious charm to this historic place. Bloch Brothers kept the distillery until 1954, a year in which Glen Scotia passed through several successive owners.
After a closure between 1984 and 1989, the distillery restarted thanks to Gibson International. In 1994, Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd acquired Gibson's shares but quickly put Glen Scotia on hold, causing intermittent production until 1999 when the distillery resumed full-time activity. In 2014, Glen Scotia was bought by the Loch Lomond group, which revitalized this legendary brand by investing heavily, increasing its production capacity, developing its warehouses, and creating a visitor and whisky enthusiast center.
The Double Cask Rum Finish stands out for an initial maturation in American oak casks, followed by an exceptional finish in Demerara rum casks from Guyana, bringing a unique aromatic richness and subtle complexity blending exotic sweetness with deep woody notes.
