The Akkeshi Distillery is ideally located in Hokkaido, an iconic region in northern Japan, famous for its preserved landscapes and unique climate, perfect for whisky maturation. Founded by Keiichi Toita, president and CEO of Kenten Co. Ltd, this innovative distillery stands out for its vision and respect for Scottish traditions, combined with Japanese meticulousness. The distillery's story began in 2013, when the company started aging tests of raw spirits from two other Japanese distilleries. In 2015, construction of the distillery began in a marshy area characterized by a thick layer of peat extending over 50 meters deep. To build the distillery on this unstable ground, the innovative Columbus construction technique, which consists of replacing the soil under the foundations with polystyrene, was adopted, thus ensuring the site's stability. In 2016, the Forsyths team in Scotland installed the iconic Scottish stills and all the necessary equipment, demonstrating Akkeshi's commitment to following traditional Scottish distillation methods. This unique expertise aims to bring Akkeshi's flavors closer to the famous Islay Malts, while giving them a refined Japanese signature. The very first Malt from the Akkeshi distillery was born in 2018, marking a key date for artisanal Japanese whisky.
The Akkeshi Shosho is the highly anticipated fourth edition of the prestigious " 24 Solar Terms Series ", a collection inspired by the ancient Asian calendar dividing the year into 24 solar seasons. " Shosho ", which symbolizes the "decline of summer", corresponds to the fourteenth solar term: a period when the heat diminishes and a refreshing breeze blows over Hokkaido at sunrise and sunset. It also coincides with the harvest season, a key moment for the cultivation of the cereals that serve as the base for this exceptional whisky. This premium blend results from the meticulous assembly of the best malts and grains from Japanese and international distilleries, carefully aged in various casks: Mizunara (rare Japanese oak), Bourbon, and Sherry.
