KOPKE - Porto - Fine Tawny at Clos des Spiritueux
Kopke is the oldest of the Porto Houses, founded in 1638 in Portugal. Created by Nicolau Köpke, then general consul of the Hanseatic League (a large European merchant association), Kopke established itself as an unmatched reference in the world of Porto. As early as 1640, it shipped its first vintages to Northern Europe, thus consolidating its reputation as a pioneer. In 1781, the Kopke House took a decisive step by acquiring an estate in the Douro Valley, becoming a full-fledged producer and focusing on exceptional Portos.
The Kopke Fine Port collection embodies the excellence of blending young Portos from various vintages, aged in stainless steel and oak barrels, benefiting from a minimum aging of 3 years. It comes in several iconic styles: Tawny, Ruby, and White. These wines are acclaimed for their aromatic richness, balance, and generosity, showcasing Kopke's ancestral expertise.
The Kopke Fine Tawny Porto is made from indigenous Douro grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, and Tinta Roriz. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested to ensure optimal quality, then destemmed and gently crushed. Maceration and fermentation take place in modern stainless steel tanks, interrupted by the addition of grape brandy once the desired sugar level is reached. The result: a fine Tawny Porto with 105 g/L residual sugar, generous and elegant, perfect as an aperitif or paired with dried fruit or chocolate desserts.
Grape varieties used: traditional Douro varieties (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz)
