The Shinshu Distillery is a pride of Hombo Shuzo (also known as Hombo Brewing Co.), renowned for its exceptional whiskies marketed under the prestigious Mars Whisky brand. Founded in 1872 by Honbu Matsusa, this unique distillery is located at 800 meters altitude in the picturesque village of Miyata, on the Japanese archipelago of Kyushu. In 1949, Hombo Shuzo obtained a license for whisky production at the Kagoshima distillery before concentrating all its production at Shinshu, a true jewel of Japanese whisky. Following a production pause imposed in 1992 due to low demand, the distillery began a renaissance in 2012, marking a new era full of innovations and successes.
Among its emblematic creations is the Komagatake, a renowned Single Malt named after the majestic Komagatake mountain that dominates the surrounding region. The Mars Maltage Cosmo, launched in July 2015, pays tribute to the exceptional location of the distillery and the beauty of the night sky visible from Mount Komagatake.
In September 2020, the Mars Shinshu distillery was completely rebuilt and significantly expanded, celebrating its 35 years of existence with modern facilities and a traditional craftsmanship still refined. This Japanese blend, aged a minimum of 8 years, offers a fresh and delicate aromatic profile, evoking the lush forests of Shinshu and the floral essences of wildflowers that color the surrounding landscapes. The label honors the Asagimadara butterfly (Parantica sita), a symbol of migration and freedom, frequently observed in September in the village of Miyada where the distillery is located.
