MIYAGIKYO - Single Malt - No Age Statement - Old Bottle - 43%
Nikka Whisky Distilling Company is a prestigious house located in Japan, founded by the legendary Masataka Taketsuru, recognized as the founding father of Japanese whisky. Coming from a family of sake brewers, Taketsuru deepened his knowledge in chemistry at university before perfecting his craft at several renowned Scottish distilleries. Returning to Japan in 1920 with his Scottish wife Rita, he contributed to the creation of the first Japanese whisky within the company that would later become Suntory (Kotobukiya Limited). His passion and expertise then led him to establish his own distillery, Yoichi, as well as the parent company Nikka. Nikka is also known for its distinct distilleries specializing in the production of Shochu (traditional Japanese distilled alcohol made from various ingredients such as rice, barley, or sweet potato), as well as facilities dedicated to the production of cider brandy and apple wine. In 2001, Nikka was integrated into the Asahi Breweries group, further enhancing its global reach.
The Miyagikyo distillery, inaugurated in 1969, represents the second iconic distillery of Nikka. It was established in an exceptional natural setting: a mystical valley shrouded in mist, nestled at the confluence of two ultra-pure water rivers. After tasting the crystalline water of the main river, now the essential source of the distillery, Taketsuru was immediately convinced of the exceptional quality of the site, justifying the rapid construction of the distillery on location. The river's name, Nikkawa, was a fortunate coincidence. The Miyagikyo Single Malt whisky is distinguished by its soft and fruity profile, offering a refined and balanced tasting experience. Unlike the peatier style of Yoichi, this single malt uses a moderate amount of peated malt and benefits from delicate distillation in an indirect steam-heated pot still at low temperature, ensuring a unique aromatic finesse.
